During Cycle 12 the 9th Graders traveled to the Harlem River. There, we ate lunch at the New York Restoration Boat Shop. Then, we walked over to Swindler Cover where the students rotated through the following three stations: investigating the Combined Sewer Overflow Outfall; taking a nature walk around the Swindler Cove Salt Marsh; and identifying different types of pollution as we took a hike along an exciting bank of boulders.
At Swindler Cove we identified herring gulls, downy woodpeckers, mallard ducks and Canadian geese. The students also identified wild rice, wild rose, swamp rose, viburnum, bay berry and beach grass.
Section 1 generally seemed to think the trip was "boring," but the 16 students who showed up for Section 2 had a good time exlporing the rocks, going farther than any other group has gone, and finding things we've never seen before. Section 3 had a beautiful day and wasn't afraid to get muddy. Section 4 had a hectic day, but they took it all in stride.
